One of the most common observations we hear from long-hair clients: "in winter, my hair seems to stop growing." Let's put the myth to bed first — hair always grows. Even in winter. What changes is how much of that growth survives.
To keep long hair healthy, the care has to be continuous: nourishment on demand, reinforcement of the fiber, trimming when needed, and quality products chosen for your specific hair.
Why length plateaus
Warmth and sun exposure support growth, but hair grows in winter too — it just faces different problems. Cold, dry air causes dehydration. When a strand loses moisture, it thins — especially at the ends — and becomes fragile. Think of a plant branch that hasn't been watered: it snaps easily.
Once the ends are thin and brittle, they break. That's why your hair "looks like it's not growing" — it is, but it's shortening faster at the tips than it's lengthening at the roots. The net result: zero length gain.
The Miami flip side
In Aventura and the broader South Florida climate the season is inverted but the mechanism is identical — only the stressor changes. Instead of cold dry air, it's salt, sun and 80% humidity for nine months. The fiber swells and contracts repeatedly, the cuticle lifts, the ends split.
Whatever the climate, the protocol is the same: reinforce, hydrate, and trim only what's truly beyond repair.
A good trim isn't "giving up length"
When the ends are thin and worn, styling itself becomes a struggle. The blowout doesn't hold, the curls fall flat, the polish never quite arrives. A well-executed trim — by someone who knows what to cut and what to restore — puts the tips back in order and makes everything above look longer, not shorter.
We always start with a diagnostic consultation before recommending a trim. In many cases, the answer is to rebuild the fiber first, then trim less.
Heat: the hidden villain
One of the most common causes of winter thinning is the overuse of non-professional heat tools, or professional ones used incorrectly. They gradually thin the hair structure. A good remise en forme treatment re-plumps and regenerates the strand, making it full-bodied, soft, and manageable for any style you want.
Hair grows year-round. The question is whether you're keeping what grows — or losing it to dehydration, breakage, and heat.
